McLeod’s Olive

tying spider, palmered and winged wet flies

a little bit of gold

The McLeod’s Olive is a winged wet fly pattern that I hadn’t heard much about over the past few years, and when I came across a dressing for it simply had to add it to my fly box.

I like the McLeod’s olive as it is a natural looking wet fly pattern which also contains a little bit of gold flash too. The colours just seem to ‘work’ somehow. I liked the combination of the grey of the wing and the gold of the abdomen. Gold and dark olive just work together so well. The grey/olive hen hackle I had to hand, added a nice soft subtle touch to the fly pattern.

Strangely, I didn’t come across much in the way of information about this winged wet fly online; I thought there would be more information online than I found. Online searches produced plenty in the way of Rough Olives, BWO Olives and Golden Olives but only a very few McLeod’s Olive patterns, with this dressing coming from Davie McPhail’s excellent YouTube channel.

Olive has been such a fortunate colour for me in wet flies over the seasons and this winged wet fly pattern will feature strongly on my cast next season I’m sure.
